~This post was written by my wife Tarn Gucci and her 1st post EVER~

I think it would be save to say that Facebook has become a world wide phenomena which many people could not live without on a daily basis. It has managed to appeal to many different personalities for a number of different reasons. I also think that we have developed our own Facebook personalities through trends that we set ourselves with our daily Facebook use. Here are what I believe the top 10 type of Facebookers personalities are-

The Quot-ers

These are the people that on a daily basis post those wonderfully uplifting, inspirational, self reflecting, somewhat self indulgent quotes. We have to be thankful for the Quoters positive energy on a daily basis however we have to be more thankful to Google which is where the Quoters visit on a regular basis searching for the perfect, ‘love quote’, ‘life quote’, ‘funny quote’, all in an attempt to be meaningful, funny or deep on a regular basis for their Facebook audience.

The Stalk-ers

The stalkers are the most discreet of all Facebookers. You would barely even know that they were active on Facebook, an occasional post, a rare picture, basic profile information. Don’t let that fool you, they are more than active. They spend many hours on Facebook seeing who said what to who, who is now single, dissecting all possible hidden meanings behind certain peoples posts and generally surfing around the limitless Facebook world. The stalkers give away is when in regular conversation, their knowledge of the latest news in Facebook world is remarkable. You may also even receive a text from a Facebook stalker telling you the latest, however they will more than often follow up with a “I barely use Facebook, it’s just for family really”!

The Lov-ers

The lovers are easy to detect, in fact they are not even trying to hide. It is basically their mission to spread their love. Their love is limitless, they love their family, their dog, their work, their life, and their friends. Lets not forget how much their friends love them back too, lovers attract lovers and spend most of their time telling each other how much they love each other. I would also like to add how much lovers like to tell their husbands or wives how much they love, miss and adore them. I believe that often this is done while in bed together on two separate laptops. Again lovers are positive people but you have to wonder if Facebook has taken over all other communications for this type of facebooker or if they would just prefer for their Facebook friends to know how “truly happy” they are.

The Shar-ers

The sharers are not big talkers, they prefer to communicate through sharing pictures, videos, links, and their latest check in. You can identify a sharer by different ways, one way would be to look at their albums. If they have a large number of photo and video albums ranging from ‘Max the dogs first bath’, to ‘Baby Joe, 45 days old’, to ‘The flowers in my garden’ you can assume they are a sharer and prefer pictures to words. Another way to tell is to look on a persons wall, if it encompasses link after link you again can assume they are a sharer. Although people of little words their pictures (and links) often tell a story.

The Flirt-ers

The flirters will often pop up from no where with a ‘poke’ or a generous but unsolicited compliment. They also encompass a little of the quoter and lover using their words to grab the attention of their latest attraction. Flirters are very active on Facebook making sure to get the desired amount of attention back from all their ‘fans’ they have harvested. Their profile picture will often be a picture of them with the most alluring smoldering eyes and smile they can muster while taking a picture of themselves in the bathroom mirror with their cell phone turned around. Maybe a somewhat harmless breed of facebookers just looking for love, but lets not be naive, the flirters are really just the players of the Facebook world.

The Gam-ers

The gamers are self explanatory, they are the people that spend endless hours playing the games of Facebook and asking you to harvest their farmville crops, and join their Mafia War. I believe these people to be people to use Facebook as a form of wind down time, maybe something to do to relax after work, maybe something to get away from the wife or husband or maybe even just because simply they like games. I do however find gamers to have an incredible amount of time on their hands to dedicate to harvesting imaginary crops. What ever their reason and whatever they choose as their time allocation to the games of Facebook all I can say is thank goodness for the privacy setting to allow me to block the endless game requests.

The Friend-ers

The frienders quite simply are the people with the most friends. For the average Joe it would be inconceivable to actually have thousands of friends, by friend I mean somebody that you actually know and may have even said hello to face to face. In Facebook world it is more than possible to achieve the popularity vote by simply clicking on every single friend suggestion. Frienders come up in your news feed with a post something like ‘Joe Smoe has just become friends with Betty Smith and 73 others’. In this situation 1 of 3 things has happened. 1- all of a sudden Betty Smith and 73 other people all decided to befriend Joe. 2- Joe has not checked his friend request for a long period of time and has decided to do some catching up. Or 3- Joe has been click click clicking to send enormous amounts of friend requests. I’m guessing Joe was not very popular growing up.

The Complain-ers

‘I hate Mondays’, ‘Weather sucks’, ‘I hate my boss’, ‘Don’t want to go to work’. These are just a very few of the types of complaints you will hear from the complainer clan. Complainers are dedicated to complaining on a regular basis so you will notice frequent activity on Facebook. Unlike the frienders the complainers don’t have a grand total of friends but what they do have are a handful of complainer commiserators loyal to every complaint. Complainers are short with their posts, sometime almost illiterate ‘i h8 mundays’ or maybe just too lazy to type in complete sentences. I would take a wild guess that a large portion of complainers relationship status is single.

The Lik-ers

The likers aren’t quite on the same level as the lovers but maybe they are working their way up and one day will promote themselves to the dizzy heights of lover. They are however similar in the sense that they like everything. ‘Took my dog for a walk’ Like button click! ‘It’s Wednesday’ Like button click! ‘Broke up with my boyfriend’ Like button click! There are a few things that baffle me with the likers, the first is the lightening speed they are able to Like a comment. A comment goes up , 3 seconds later they have Liked it. Secondly isn’t it rude to like a bad comment? ‘Rover my childhood dog died today age 15, he has been with me through everything’ 1, 2, 3 seconds, the likers strike. The last and maybe the most baffling is the fact that they even Like questions. ‘What’s a good restaurant in Orange County?’, Like button click! Likers you can’t like a question, a question requires an answer!

The Invit-ers

The inviters are the people that like to invite you to every event manageable. Inviters have an inability however to sieve through their friend list and choose which events would be appropriate for each individual based on location and also activity. Likers if I live in Texas it is unlikely I will be clicking the attend button for the slumber party you are hosting tonight in Ohio. Nor at 32 years old would I be attending a slumber party anyway. I will not be attending your boyfriends Metallic tribute band playing on Saturday in a dungeon down town Los Angeles. Me my husband and our 3 children will also not be attending the wet t-shirt contest held in Australia this Sunday. My suggestion to the inviter fraternity, make some groups within your friend list to ensure the people you invite might actually attend your event.

My closing statement to all of this is a resounding applause to Facebook. We might not all like Facebook, we probably all fall into at least one or more of the crazy categories above , I’m sure also there has been hurt caused by things said, seen and disclosed on Facebook. However Mark Zuckenberg came up with a great concept in Facebook but the thing that fuels it is us. All of us and the natural human condition. The people at Facebook put the Social into Social Media through their understanding of peoples social trends. There is one final category I forgot and that’s the ‘Los-ers’ category. These are the people that quiet simply are NOT on Facebook!

Happy Facebooking people, use it all for good. Facebook isn’t bad, only how we use it can be. Remember we are the fuel, Facebook is merely the vehicle.

You might already know that the Facebook’s news stream has two major filters – Top News and Most Recent. What you might not know is that, you can filter the news feed by Photos, Status updates, links or even pages! This is a real useful tip, specially if you have a lots of friends and/or if you have liked lot of Facebook pages.

So, how to filter the Facebook news feed by Photos, status updates or pages?

That’s really simple. Look for the down arrow next to “Most Recent” button on top right of the screen. Just click on that and you will be able to filter out the messy feed as you like.

For some silly reason, Facebook does not have an option to filter out all the videos in the news feed. Personally, I love to watch most of the videos shared by my friends and I always have a hard time searching for them amongst my cluttered news feed. Come on Mark, don’t be mean. Provide us, the video maniacs, an option to filter out the videos.

If you are an Outlook user, you probably have it open all the time. Now you can update your Facebook status, see your friend statuses and see the number of new requests without having to open the browser or any other applications. FBLook seamlessly integrates Facebook into Outlook.

Download FBLook, it is free!

Features

Update your Facebook status directly from Outlook.

Set your status to the name of the song you’re playing in iTunes or WMP.

See your friend statuses.

See notifications of new Friend Requests, Messages, Invites, Pokes, etc..

Configuration and Setup

After you install FBLook, you will have to tell Facebook that you want to allow FBLook to access Facebook on your behalf. Facebook has a fairly intricate way of doing that, which will require you to flip between Outlook and the browser a few times. After you click FBLook’s “Login to Facebook” button, FBLook will display several messages to guide you through the process. That process consists of three or four steps. But don’t worry; you’ll have to do that only once. After you login and tell Facebook that you allow FBLook to update your status, it will be smooth sailing.

In case you missed it, today Facebook launched their new layout of your profile page. Last night Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, was on 60 Minutes to show off the new feature as well as talk about his take on the state of Facebook. You can catch all that footage here.

Here at the Yellow Sandbox, we want to give you a quick rundown on how to convert your profile to the new layout. This can be done in just a few simple steps.

1. Visit the following URL to get started: http://www.facebook.com/about/profile

2. Click the “Get the New Profile” button on the introduction screen

3. Your profile will automatically convert and then you can take the tour to learn more about the new layout.

The Facebook profile really doesn’t involve any fundamentally new features, but simply a fresh layout and approach. The new profile attempts to showcase YOU a bit more. Your most recently tagged photos will be displayed across the top, as well as your key information like networks, age, employment, and hometown. Also, your profile will highlight the things you like such as your favorite tv shows, music, books, movies, and sports teams.

In just a few hours glance, I have to admit I like the new layout. I think it’s a fresh breath to what was becoming a very busy Facebook profile page and I think the user will enjoy learning new things about their closest Facebook friends.

Facebook is rolled out a new breed of Pages called Friendship Pages that pull together the public wall posts, comments, photos (based on tags) and events that two friends have in common.

The Friendship Pages feature was cooked up by Facebook software engineer Wayne Kao and then brought to life in an internal hackathon event. The Pages are designed to the tell the story of two friends on Facebook through their shared activity.

“For those of us who have worked on it, the best part is the human side of these Pages. They can bring back memories, conversations and times spent together,” explains Kao.

Friendship Pages are accessible from under the main photo on a friend’s profile Page and via links from related wall posts or relationship stories. The Pages are public to other members so long as they have permission to view both users’ profiles.

Friendship Pages are said to be launching today, but are likely being delivered to members in a gradual rollout. We think the Pages are an interesting alternative way to organize Facebook activity around friends, though it does add another layer of complexity to the site.

Yesterday Facebook launched Deals for Places, an add-on to Facebook Places which brings discounts and deals to Facebook users at businesses large and small. The Facebook Deals will be rolling out to users over the next few days and will be delivering buy-one get-one free deals at restaurants, cheap sports tickets, an extra night at the Palms, free Jeans from the GAP and more — just for checking into a business with Facebook Places on your mobile phone.

The new offers from Deals for Places are similar to the discounts we have seen for Foursquare and Gowalla users, which reward users for checking into a location on their smart phone. Checking in at a store basically means you have opened an app on your phone that can determine your rough location, and clicking a button that marks you as visiting. Other check in services, like ShopKick, use a audio-based system to prove you’re in the store.

The new Deals for Places offerings look similar to other location-based discounts, but in many cases is a bigger discount than you’ll find on Foursquare or other location-based check ins.

The following stores, teams and hotels are offering discounts on Facebook Deals for Places in the coming weeks

.

24 Hour Fitness: Donating $1 to Kaboom to support children’s health for everyone who checks in to its fitness clubs.

Facebook announced a new feature last Wednesday that allows you to download all of your photos, videos, wall posts, notes, messages, events and friends. This data accessibility feature is a major step for Facebook, which has always been a “walled garden” – a place to put information, but very difficult to extract it again.

The ability to retrieve content from your Facebook account will be tremendously helpful to those who are struggling with the online accounts of a departed loved one. Provided you know the email address and password to the deceased’s account, you can archive their content in case it is needed or wanted in the future.

This feature is also useful for those who wish to deactivate their loved ones’ Facebook account after death as it offers a way to safeguard the data before it is removed from the web. (Be advised, though, that Facebook retains all users’ data on their servers after account deactivation, even if the account is no longer publicly accessible on the web. There is currently no way to permanently delete an account from Facebook.)

Here is a video explaining the steps. The roll out of this new feature to its 500 million users will be incremental.

Facebook has launched a new Group feature that allows people to build a social network within the social network. Here’s a step-by-step guide to how to create a group.

The new Facebook Groups feature allows you to create a social network within a social network, as well as enjoy group chats

Facebook Groups is a new feature that allows people to group their friends by interest, activity, or topic. You could set up a group for your netball team, your university or school project, or even to help organise a holiday or a trip.

It enables the members of a group to engage in a real-time conversation using Facebook Chat, share photos or videos that they only want other members of the group to see, and assign the group a special email address to make it easier to keep up with what’s being planned and discussed.

Facebook has always had a “groups” feature, but there are few key differences between the “old” and “new” Facebook Groups.

The “new” groups allows you to engage in group chats, and set up a single email address for the group, so that anything sent to that address will automatically appear on the group’s wall. You can also set group notifications in the “new” groups tool, which means that every time something is posted to the group, all users will receive an alert. Don’t worry, though, you can decide what kind of notifications you receive, so you’re not deluged with alerts.

The “new” groups tool also allows you to post documents to the group; it’s not the most fully featured collaborative document tool, but it does allow you to use a small amount of markup on your basic text document (such as bullet points and bold or italics), and it also saves a version history, so you can see what has been changed on the document.

Your list of “old” groups can still be found under your profile picture. There is currently no easy way to turn an “old” group in to a “new” group. Once your profile has been updated to make the “new” groups accessible from your profile page, you will no longer be able to create “old” groups, though you will still be able to access those “old” groups.

So, here’s how to set up a group:

:: To create a new Facebook Group, go to www.facebook.com/groups. Some users will be able to access this new feature directly through their profile page; for the time being, others will still access the “old” groups option when they click on Groups under their profile picture. Use the special Facebook Group home page for now to ensure you’re using the right tools.

:: Give your group a name. Then decide who you would like to invite to the group – typing in the name of Facebook friends will automatically add them in to the box; you do not need to use an email address.

:: Select the privacy level for your group. By default, all groups are “closed”, which means that although your other Facebook contacts will be able to see which of your friends are in any given group, they will not be able to see any of the content of that group, such as wall posts, photos and news feeds. You could decide to set your group to “open”, which makes the list of members, and the content of the site, fully public; or you could choose “secret”, which keeps both the list of members and content of the group totally private.

:: Once you have set up your group, you can assign it an email address (on a first come, first served basis). This enables members of the group to send an email to the assigned address to turn their message in to a wall post on the group’s wall. To generate an email address for the group, you need to click on the “Edit Group” option on the group’s home page, and select the “Email address: choose for group” option. Your email address will be something like yourgroupname@groups.facebook.com.

:: You can also use a Group Chat function to talk to all the members of a group at the same time. If anyone from the group is offline when the chat takes place, they can still see the chat history when they log back on, so they don’t miss out on anything.

According to TechCrunch, Facebook may be designing its own phone. The social networking giant is reportedly working now on the software. Such software would most probably integrate facebook as the main feature of the phone, such as making a call to a Facebook friend rather than just a phone number.

Rumored to be working on the project are former iPhone app developer Joe Hewitt and Google’s previous Chrome OS project leader Matthew Papakipos.

Sources claimed the project is a direct reaction to devices with full hardware and software integration, like the Google Nexus One but also Apple’s iPhone. Facebook already has full-featured apps for both but only a mild amount of integration. It has a deeper level of influence on webOS and will have more still with Windows Phone 7, but neither HP nor Microsoft are expected to have significant market share.

The project, being in the early stages, doesn’t reveal much details. Although some analysts suggest that Google’s Android is being eyed to be its core OS. It means, in some weird way, Google is actually helping its Facebook to rival them.

WILL YOU BUY IT?

There was some other news, however, that Google may have hoped you missed, as it shifts the marketing conversation from search to social – specifically, away from Google and directly on to Facebook.

New data from comScore has revealed that time spent on Facebook in the U.S. during the month of August surpassed the time spent on Google sites for the first time in history. That includes all of Google’s properties – as in YouTube, Gmail, Google Buzz, the whole lot of them. This adds to the momentum sparked by a similar report from Hitwise back in March, when Facebook became the most visited site in the U.S. for the first time in its short but meteoric history.

Of course these are significant milestones for any company, but what do they mean for the future of the industry? Will looking for content on search engines be overtaken by the sharing of content on social networks? Or, according to the statistics, has that happened already?

Because of these milestones and Facebook’s growing base of more than 500 million active users, it may be time to take another look at how your business is utilizing the social network. We will review some of the different ways that companies can leverage the enormous popularity of Facebook – and also be on the lookout for the feature article 500 Million Ways to Earn from Facebook in the upcoming November issue of Website Magazine.

Facebook Pages
If your business doesn’t have a presence on the site yet, drop everything you’re doing and go set up a Facebook Page. If you already have a Facebook Page for your business, perhaps you could be getting a little more out of it. Some of the basic rules of thumb include the following:

• Set goals for your Facebook page and monitor your progress
• Make your page interesting and informative, and update it as often as you can
• Promote your Facebook page on your business website and elsewhere; add a Find us on Facebook button wherever you can
• Reward your Facebook Fans with discounts and special promotions
• Create a Facebook user group that will be of interest/useful to your audience
• Join other Facebook user groups that pertain to your industry or niche
• Take advantage of Facebook’s tools; track your success with Facebook analytics

Facebook Places
Facebook unveiled its location-based check-in service last month with the announcement of Places, an enormous word-of-mouth marketing opportunity for businesses and brands. Businesses can add a Facebook Place to their Facebook Page, or the two can be combined. The result of either option is getting your company’s address, map, phone number and other data in front of Facebook’s massive user network and giving them a way to share the information with friends.

Facebook Places is also built directly into the advertising platform, and registered businesses can target their ads with very specific information such as location. Ads can be bought on a pay-per-click basis, and more information is below.

Facebook Ads
Facebook will generate about half of the projected $1.68 billion spent on U.S. advertising on social networks this year, and some companies are said to be spending about $20,000 per day advertising on the site. If you are yet doing so for your own business, it might be worth investigating. Below are some tips to help you get started:

• Be as specific as possible with your keywords and demographic selections
• Use compelling images, titles and copy in your ads
• Make your ads as interactive and engaging as you can
• Frequently update and refresh the images and copy for better results
• Be vigilant about testing your ads and monitoring the results
• Bid high to get your ads approved faster by Facebook
• Start with CPC ads if you have a very small budget, otherwise CPM is the better bet
• Use Facebook Ads Manager, which can be downloaded and installed on Firefox

Whether it is through a paid advertising campaign or some basic social media marketing, using Facebook’s incredible platform to help grow your business should by now be a strategy used in some capacity by every Web professional.
