Top 5 Things to Look For When Buying a Product Online

There are so many companies now a days that make their money selling products directly through the internet and some times all it takes to make the sale is a clean website with fancy product overview and a nice catchy video telling you how great the world will be if you buy their product.  You will also see things like a list of testimonials from people who have bought the product and how they can’t live without it.  Now some thing you may not see is a good way to contact them if you have a question before you buy it.

I would like to share a story with you that just happened to me where I was easily sucked into the product is perfect, so buy it now but was left with something that would not be any good at all and no way to resolve it.  This will be a story on how NOT to sell a product online and what to watch out for.

So, I began my hunt for an Affiliate Management system to be integrated into WPfixIt.com that would be easy to use and well supported.  I found many options out there that would meet the needs that I was looking for.  I decided on a product called Magic Affiliates Plugin.  I liked this product because of the list of reasons I saw below on their website.

  • Easy to use and setup
  • Integrated well with my site
  • Included training videos
  • Offered 1 year of support and upgrades

Now, making a long story short, NONE OF THE ABOVE features actually worked once I purchased, installed and setup the product.  I have bought several online software products and understand that sometimes there are issues with how it functions.  This is why I also make sure a product is supported before I get that warm and fuzzy feeling to buy it.  So after I realized that things were not working properly, I went to the their website to contact them for support knowing that I had a year’s worth and they would sort out what ever issue was happening.  When I arrived at their CONTACT PAGE, I was sad to see that there was no phone #, email, live chat or even a web form.  Instead there was a mailing address and a link to use their support system.  OK, I was feeling much better seeing the link to SUPPORT and also if I created a ticket now it would be answered because they even stated that “Most importantly, we are here for you. Knowledgeable and friendly support staff is available to you Monday – Friday, 9 A.M. – 5 P.M. (EST).”

Alright, my first support ticket is in to them on a Thursday and had a detailed explanation of what I needed resolved.  Everything was going to be ok and the $80 product I bought from them was going to get fixed and running smoothly in no time.  NOT!!!!!  Below is a picture of the amount of support tickets I left and the ones with the red stars are the ones that were answered.  I will get to that in a moment.

So after my first day of purchase and a few un-answered support tickets later, I finally received a response requesting login info so they could take a look.  I said to myself, YESSS!!!  I think this was way to premature in my excitement.  I quickly sent them the login info they needed and then asked if this would be sorted before the weekend because they don’t do support then.  They did not reply as you can see below.

I could not get an answer AGAIN!  I decided to look around for another way to contact them and found an email address on their privacy policy.  I sent my concerns there and got no response again.  I then opened up another ticket and you can see it below.  Notice how they said that someone would update me before Monday.

Now this is where it really gets interesting.  Monday came and I never heard back from them and decided I would request that if it can not get fixed by end of day Monday, I would request a refund.  Suddenly they did respond but not to tell me they were going to fix my issues but rather how the refund process works.  I was shocked and could not believe they would rather give the money back versus support a product they sold me and guaranteed support on for a year.  You can see this ticket trail below.

So I continue to wait and see what the final outcome will be but I think it is obvious.  The reason I wanted to share this story was for 2 reasons.  One to hope that someone interested in any product from this company (magic Affiliates & Magic Members) might find this and read it before they spend the money and the second reason it to give you my top 5 things to look for before you buy something online.

Here they are below

  1. Make sure there is a clear way to contact the company and make contact before you buy
  2. Research for people that have bought the product and what their thoughts are
  3. Read the return policy carefully and make sure you understand it
  4. Pay with PayPal if possible so you can file an easy dispute if there are any problems
  5. Trust your instinct.  If you feel something is off, don’t buy
